Plans are under way for the annual Escanaba Community Thanksgiving Dinner, which has been held for the past 39 years in the community. A new non-profit is being formed to organize the dinner. Dennis Lamarche says they need volunteers
“If you’re able to move, we’ll find a job for you,” LaMarche told RRN News. “We’ll assign them to different tasks, depending on who’s there and who’s not there.”
Maggie Tall has organized this for all of the last 39 years. She says that local businesses and volunteers have been generous for many, many years.
“Since 1980, it’s been every year that God has taken care of it,” Tall told RRN News. “He gets the community behind it. That’s why we call it the Community Thanksgiving Dinner.”
LaMarche says that if you’d like to make a donation to help with future dinners, send a check to the Peninsula Federal Credit Union.
“We’d like to keep this going for another 39 years,” LaMarche said.
You can sign up to volunteer on either Thanksgiving…or the day before or after the holiday…by calling the Community Foundation at 786-66-54.
Around 1,200 people took part in the meal last year, including take-outs. The Community Dinner at the Escanaba High School will start at noon Thanksgiving.
