The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a fully engulfed residential structure fire located at 34983 E Johnswood Road on Drummond Island. 911 calls indicated that two individuals were still inside the building at that time, 10 p.m. Sunday night.
Preliminary information on scene indicates that two people, 30-year-old Kyle Ray Messenger and his 5-year-old son did perish in the fire.
The investigation remains active at this time while deputies and detectives continue to process the scene with the Michigan State Police Marshall Division.
Contact with the affected schools was made and arrangements to provide grief counselors and support staff to students and faculty has been made.
