The numbers changed slightly, but not enough to change the results as two Schoolcraft County election tallies were recounted Friday.
Local Three New reports that the first was on a county jail millage request and the second being District One’s seat on the Schoolcraft County Board of Commissioners. This recount, conducted by the Board of County Canvassers, took place today at the Schoolcraft County Courthouse.
“It’s up to one of the candidates, an aggrieved candidate,” said Beth Edwards, Clerk of the Board of Canvassers. “The write-in candidate, Mr. Vandagriff, requested the recount and here we are today doing that and the Sheriff filed the paperwork to recount the millage.”
The results are the same, although the votes changed slightly:
– The county jail millage request failed: the recount was 1834 YES votes and 1943 NO votes. That’s one less YES vote and one more NO vote than the November 6 ballot count result. The millage request would have been for up to 3 mills from 2018 to 2037 on all property in Schoolcraft County to build, operate, furnish and equip a new county jail.
– The results for District One’s seat on the Schoolcraft County Board of Commissioners were identical, although the numbers from two townships changed by one vote each.
Running in that race was incumbent Craig Reiter against write-in candidate William Vandagriff. Reiter received 295 votes, while Vandagriff received 286 votes.
Out of all the ballot boxes recounted, only one was not recountable due to a seal being broken.
