Delta County celebrated the success of its new jail constriction project on Tuesday.
The sheriff’s department took several hundred people on tours of the new jail for three hours Tuesday afternoon, allowing them to see the “pod” cells, kitchen, and booking area. Undersheriff Phil Griebel says they did it to thank the public for its approval of the millage that will pay for the new jail, and to see where their tax dollars are going.
“The turnout was great,” Griebel told RRN News. “I figured people would come out to see the new jail, but not this many. We had five tour guides taking groups of 15 or 20 at a time in there. Some of them never saw a jail before.”
County Administrator Phil Strom says the inmates should be moved into the new facility (from the current jail in downtown Escanaba) by late spring or early summer.
