The Ishpeming Police Department responded to a report of a small child locked in a vehicle with no one around and the vehicle was not running.
The vehicle was reported to be behind the Salvation Army on East Division St. in Ishpeming.
Employees at the Salvation Army advised that they had observed the vehicle in the parking lot with a door open. An employee did not see anyone around and approached the vehicle and closed the door. The vehicle was not running at this time. As the door closed, the Salvation Army employee heard a baby start crying and observed the child in the back seat. When the door closed, it locked the vehicle.
When officers arrived they broke a window to gain access to the child and called UHPS EMS to respond for the child. The child was alert but cold. Officers removed the child and placed her in the patrol vehicle to warm her until EMS arrived. EMS transported the child to UPHS Bell.
About a half hour after the initial call, the mother showed back up at the scene. She advised she was at a friend’s, but would not give specific information on her where-a-bouts. She was arrested by officers and transported to the Marquette County Jail.
The 2-year-old child was turned over to Child Protection Services after treatment for exposure.
The name of the woman is not being released at this time. The report will be submitted by the Marquette County Prosecutors Office for review of Child Abuse Charges.
