U-P state representative Beau LaFave introduced legislation today that he says will prevent a local police officer from being fired if that officer arrests someone and finds out that the person is wanted for terrorism or other national security concerns.
LaFave tells the Radio Results Network that the officer could report the arrest to federal authorities without fearing that he will be fired for violating a community’s “sanctuary city” policy.
“If this person is a threat to the security of our state, and our nation, and is wanted on criminal charges in some other country, then I don’t think that the officers who have them in our jails should be threatened with being fired or demoted because they called for back-up from the federal government,” said LaFave, R-Iron Mountain.
LaFave says the bill will go to the Homeland Security, Veterans and Miliatry Affairs Committee…which he chairs.
