Governor Gretchen Whitmer delivered her first State of the State message to a joint session of the Michigan Legislature Tuesday night. She urged lawmakers to spend more money on fixing the state’s roads, calling previous efforts by the state legislature and former Governor Rick Snyder as only “slowing the decline”. Whitmer then said that “I did not run for Governor to only slow our decline as a state”.
Whitmer did not say how much more money she wanted for road repairs, and did not say how she would propose to raise that money.
The governor also proposed a program that would set up a scholarship program where ever student in Michigan would get “two years of debt-free community college” education. She also urged lawmakers to pass legislation that would ban the use of hand-held cell phones in Michigan, requiring, instead, a “hands-free” device.
