With a cast including over 60 local youth, the Superior Arts Youth Theater will present Disney’s Newsies: The Broadway Musical at Northern Michigan University’s Forest Roberts Theatre, March 7-10, 2019.
Based on the 1992 motion picture, and inspired by a true story, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken, including the now-classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day” and “Santa Fe.” SAYT’s production is directed by Susan Candey, with choreography by Jill Grundstrom and music direction by Jeff Bruning.
Set in turn-of-the century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right.
Newsies will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7; 7 p.m. Friday, March 8; 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, March 9, and at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 10 at Northern Michigan University’s Forest Roberts Theatre. Advance tickets are on sale now: $15 for adults and $9 for students. Tickets purchased at the door will be $17 and $11, respectively. Tickets are available online at tickets.nmu.edu (there is a print at home option), by phone at 906-227-1032 or in person at any NMU ticketing outlet, including the Berry Events Center, University Bookstore, Superior Dome or the Forest Roberts Theatre.
