At 0945 Friday morning, Chippewa County Central Dispatch received at 911 call from a 24-year-old man advising that he was at the Upper Tahquamenon Falls State Park, armed with a firearm and contemplating suicide.
Local Three News reports that Michigan State Police, assisted by the Luce County Sheriffs Department, Chippewa County Sheriffs Department, Michigan Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Border Patrol responded to the scene.
Chippewa County Central Dispatch kept in contact with the subject while law enforcement secured the scene. After several hours of negotiations, the subject agreed to turn himself over to authorities. He was taken into custody without incident.
A firearm was located in his vehicle and seized. The subject was subsequently transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Sections of M-123, near the upper falls were closed temporarily and employees of the Tahquamenon Falls Brewery and Pub were secured inside the establishment until the incident was resolved. The incident remains under investigation.
