The Escanaba City Council has approved a 41-percent expansion in the city’s solar project. It launched last year with a capacity of 35-hundred-10 panels, and now it will be expanded to 49-hundred-68 panels.
The city council approved the expansion Thursday night.
City Electric Superintendent Mike Furmanski tells the Radio Results Network that this won’t cost the city any more money.
“The total rent cost is already there,” Furmanski told RRN News. “When we fenced it, we fenced the entire site, so that cost has already been spent. The transformer was sized large enough for a potential expansion. So a lot of the infrastructure we put in last year was sized thinking of the possibility of doing an expansion.”
The panels cost $407 each and Furmanski says the average home needs between ten and 25 of them. So far, the city has sold 64 panels.
