The Escanaba Downtown Development Authority has been approved for an 80-thousand dollar grant for its “shared use kitchen” project. The money comes from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The project will see the current kitchen at the new marketplace on Ludington Street get a complete makeover…with new facilities that will allow people to rent it for baking and other cooking. Agriculture Director Gary McDowell says there were 20 grants approved out of 94 proposals statewide, totaling 1-point-8 million dollars.
The Escanaba project was the only one in the Upper Peninsula that was approved.
“Clearly, Michigan remains committed to partnering with its food and agriculture businesses, as well as the towns, villages, and cities they call home,” said McDowell. “When people talk of economic growth and job creation, they often think of large companies and corporations, but the truth is, it’s the sum of all the small and mid-sized businesses that employ the most people and help the most communities thrive. So, we’re proud to use the resources we have to incentivize even more private investments in the great state of Michigan.”
