The Bay College millage request went down to defeat on Tuesday as Delta County voters soundly rejected the 9/10 of a mill increase. The vote was 5,332 no to 1,874 yes. The proposal would have paid for energy efficiency upgrades on campus, and helped the general operating budget to negate the need for large tuition increases.
Bay College President Laura Coleman thanked everyone for voting.
“They certainly sent us a message: they’re tired of millages,” Coleman told RRN News. “The board is going to be looking at alternatives, including the scope of the project, and we have a lot of thinking and reviewing to do. We will be getting started on that very soon.”
Coleman added that she was surprised by the proposal failing by such a wide margin.
“That’s a big, huge difference,” Coleman said. “The groups that I spoke to, 90-percent of them, I felt, we’re 100-percent behind us, and pleased with what we were saying.”
