Upper Peninsula Congressman Jack Bergman spoke against the articles of impeachment against President Trump Wednesday afternoon.
The Watersmeet Republican called the proceedings a “sham” and suggested that the entire process was a political exercise by House Democrats that was aimed at removing a president no matter what the cost.
“I believe the American people need to be looked in the eye by all of their representatives,” Bergman said. “This has been in the works since November of 2016 and was all but promised when the Democrats took the (House) majority.”
Bergman says the process has “woefully trampled on decades of bipartisan precedent” and the president was denied the due process that is afforded to all Americans by the Constitution.
“If this isn’t partisan politics, I don’t know what is,” Bergman said. “The impeachment votes today represent the worst of Washington, D.C.”
Bergman closed his 90 seconds of floor time by suggesting that the people he represents in the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula are disgusted.
“Michigan’s First District sent me to Washington, D.C., to get things done,” Bergman said. “To get the government off their backs, and to help rural Michiganders and other people around the country keep more of their hard-earned currency.”
Earlier, Michigan Democrats Brenda Lawrence of Southfield, Dan Kildee of Flint, and Rashida Tlaib of Detroit were among those speaking in favor of impeaching the president.
