It was a foggy, dreary day in Escanaba on Thursday, but inside the Sand Point Lighthouse in Ludington Park, it was toasty warm and bright.
The Delta County Historical Society held its annual holiday open house, extending the holiday season in a relaxed, old-fashioned way.
There was holiday music, cookies and hot cider for refreshments, and the Christmas Tree was on display with decorations from a time where there were no electric lights.
“We’re a little down on numbers, but I think that’s because of the weather,” organizer Elizabeth Keller with the Delta County Historical Society said. “We gets lots of local people, we gets lots of people from out of town, we’ve had people who have traveled from across the country. I’m pretty sure they didn’t travel just to have a cookie, but they come here! It’s just to give back to the community. To say ‘thank you’ for supporting us and thank you for being a part of our organization and, just ‘thank you’ for participating.”
It was, perhaps, fitting that the holiday open house was held on such a foggy day on Thursday.
The lighthouse is styled after how it would have looked in 1913, and is complete with a living quarters where the men who worked in the lighthouse would have stayed.
If you missed Thursday’s open house, don’t worry, they will do it again Friday afternoon…from 1:00 until 4:00.
