Escanaba Department of Public Safety responded to 1315 1st Avenue South for a structure fire at 2:18 a.m. on Saturday, December 28. Upon arrival, officers found fire in the basement of the two-story dwelling that contained two apartments. Officers were able to rescue one cat from the fire. There were other pets that are unaccounted for at this time. The fire spread to the upper levels and into the attic of the dwelling.
Officers remained on the scene for 8.5 hours. The fire was extremely difficult to get to due to the interior structure, and damage to the building. The building sustained heavy fire, smoke, and water damage. There was report of injuries to any person as all were able to get out of the building.
Escanaba Public Safety was assisted by the American Red Cross, Delta County Sheriff’s Department, Rampart, Ford River Township Fire Department, Gladstone Public Safety Department, Escanaba Township Fire Department, Escanaba City Electric, DTE, Escanaba Department of Public Works, and Delta County Central Dispatch Center.
