The Marquette City Fire Department was Dispatched to 375 N. River Park Circle, RTI Surgical for a report of a Heat Treat Furnace that had filled the building with a chemical smell.
Dispatch notified MCFD that the employees had evacuated the building and were going to be outside near the area of shipping and receiving.
Upon Arrival the Fire Department made contact with RTI employees and were updated to the situation. It was determined shortly after that we did have an active incident of a chemical nature inside the building.
The area involved had been filled with an orange plume, and a clear liquid was visible on the floor. A third alarm went out for addition personnel to respond to the scene along with a Haz-Mat technician from the City Fire Department.
Information was being gathered from MSDS books onsite and though employee input of what chemicals were possibly involved. Due to the nature of the chemicals possibly involved along with the amount available in the area there was no danger to surrounding homes or the general public.
Employees from RTI were transported to UPHS Marquette for evaluation and were treated and released.
The building was secured, and proper entities notified. Once personnel and equipment arrived on scene, a three man Haz-Mat crew made entry into the area involved to positively identify the chemical and the source of the leak.
When the chemical was identified, the Haz-Mat team took some air readings and exited the building. Upon exiting the team went thru DECON and the building was again secured.
RTI Surgical will remain closed until the spill is cleaned up and air quality assurances have taken place.
