The Bay de Noc Beekeeping Club is excited to announce the 3rd annual Beekeeping 101 event to take place on January 25, 2020.
There are many reasons that people choose to become a beekeeper and this event is designed to assist on the path to doing just that. Individuals who would like to make a difference in the worldwide decline of honeybees, those seeking a way to more effectively pollinate their garden or crop, those who value honey and want access to their own fresh comb, and those who just want to learn about this process for personal growth are all welcome.
Joel Lantz, a beekeeper of 30+ years, and other experienced Upper Peninsula apiarists will be providing invaluable information on the science and art of beekeeping. Basics about honeybees and their roles in the hive, what equipment to start with, how to get your bees, and so much more will be covered.
“There is a lot of information out there on keeping bees,” says Jessica LaMarch, club President, “but so much of that information is for warmer-weather climates. What I find invaluable when learning from Joel Lantz is how to care for honeybees in our unique climate.”
This free event will take place in Room 952 in the Joseph Heirman University Center on the Bay College Escanaba campus from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. All are welcome and registration is not required. Lunch will not be provided, but coffee and snacks will be available by donation.
“Beekeeping is a fascinating process once you get started. It seems silly to say, but you kind of fall in love with these mesmerizing creatures. They open your eyes to what is happening around you and you become more engaged with your natural surroundings. We are looking forward to helping new beekeepers get started,” enthuses LaMarch.
