CLICK TO HEAR CLIP FROM DR. JONEIGH KHALDUN: STAY HOME
Governor Gretchen Whitmer on Monday gave a press conference on Michigan’s battle with the coronavirus,
The governor did not announce an extension of the “Stay at Home” order, which is scheduled to run out on April 13. She also did not announce further changes to the state’s school year, which is scheduled to resume April 13. She indicated that an announcement would be coming later this week on that.
The governor did order a freeze on state hiring, and vetoed several line items in a supplemental budget that will pump $150 million into the coronavirus fight.
“Now is not the time to sign a supplemental bill for anything other than dollars that can be utilized to help our COVID-19 response,” she said.
The governor said that she expects the numbers of cases, and deaths, to rise sharply this week. Whitmer told Michigan residents to not get discouraged and think that their obeying the “Stay at Home” order isn’t helping.
“We will get through this together,” Whitmer said. “When you see those numbers rise, don’t think that it doesn’t mean that your participation, your staying at home, isn’t having an impact, because it is, and it will.”
The state’s top medical official, Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, said that complying with the “Stay at Home” order means staying inside your home at all times.
“Kids should not be outside playing with their neighbors,” Khaldun said. “People should not be playing with each other in parks. People should not be leaving their homes to buy things that are not essential. This is not the time to have extended family gatherings.People MUST stay home.”
