The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported Sunday afternoon that the state’s total number of confirmed coronavirus cases has jumped to 24,638, which is 645 more cases in the past 24 hours.
There have now been 1,487 deaths reported in Michigan due to the virus.
That’s 95 more deaths in the past 24 hours statewide.
The overwhelming majority of the cases and deaths are in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties, surrounding the City of Detroit.
There are 47 reported COVID-19 cases in the Upper Peninsula: 22 in Marquette County, nine in Delta County, four in Mackinac County, four in Gogebic County, three in Dickinson County, two in Schoolcraft County, and one each Menominee, Houghton, and Luce Counties.
There are now eight deaths reported in the Upper Peninsula. Marquette County reports four deaths, which is two more than in Saturday’s report. Dickinson County has reported two deaths, while Delta and Gogebic have each reported one death.
Thc Michigan Department of Health and Human Services cautioned that the numbers released on Easter Sunday might not really show the state’s virus caseload, and death count, are subsiding.
*Although a reduced number of COVID-19 cases are being reported today, 645 cases compared to 1,392 reported on April 11, and deaths, 95 compared to 111 on April 11, we cannot say if this represents a true decline in COVID-19 cases and deaths in our state.”
“Reported case counts may reflect a reduction in the amount of laboratory testing performed over the weekend and holiday. Single day fluctuations in the number of confirmed cases may not be significant, as a number of external factors can affect data reporting.”
“Although there is a limited amount of data to compare, previous testing reports have illustrated consistent Sunday decreases with some being as high as a 25 percent reduction over the previous day. Sunday, March 22 had a 25 percent drop in reported tests. Sunday, March 29 saw a 3 percent drop in reported tests. Sunday, April 5 saw a 25 percent drop in reported tests.”
“Please note that these represent the date that the laboratory sent the information, not the date of onset of symptoms for the cases which would precede this date and is collected during the public health response to these referrals.”
State officials say that at 433 people so far have recovered from the virus. These are people who are still alive 30 days after testing positive for the virus. Those numbers will be updated every Saturday, according to MDHHS.

Cumulative Total of Recovered COVID-19 Cases (as of 4/10/2020): 433
Note on recovery: During this response, MDHHS is reviewing vital records statistics to identify any laboratory confirmed COVID-19 cases who are 30 days out from their onset of illness to represent recovery status. As the pandemic continues to impact Michigan, this pool will expand to include more cases. Recovered is defined as the number of persons with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis who are alive 30 days post-onset (or referral date if onset is not available). The number of persons recovered on April 10th, 2020 represents COVID-19 confirmed individuals with an onset date on or prior to March 11th, 2020. These numbers will be updated every Saturday.
