The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported Monday afternoon that the state’s total number of confirmed coronavirus cases has jumped to 25,635, which is 997 more cases in the past 24 hours.
There have now been 1,602 deaths reported in Michigan due to the virus.
That’s 115 more deaths in the past 24 hours statewide.
In a Monday afternoon news conference, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said these numbers show “early signs” that the number of cases, and deaths, are starting to level off in Michigan.
“We’re cautiously optimistic,” Whitmer said. “We need a lot more data to determine if this is a trend, but this is something where we can see that the Stay At Home order is working.”
The overwhelming majority of the cases and deaths are in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties, surrounding the City of Detroit.
There are 50 reported COVID-19 cases in the Upper Peninsula: 24 in Marquette County, nine in Delta County, four in Mackinac County, four in Gogebic County, three in Dickinson County, three in Schoolcraft County, and one each Menominee, Houghton, and Luce Counties.
There were three new cases reported on Monday: two in Marquette County and one in Schoolcraft County. There were no new U.P. deaths reported.
