Delta County’s United Way continues to help as many nonprofit groups in the county get through the coronavirus crisis as possible.
Executive Director Julie Mallard says that they meet every Thursday, using Zoom technology, to go over the grant requests from various agencies, schools, and organizations, and they give grants from the COVID-19 relief fund.
She says they gave a grant to the Big Bay deNoc School earlier this month to help students get the technology they need, and then sent another grant to the Garden Peninsula to help with Big Bay’s food distribution program.
The money is used not for food, but for other things, like shopping bags, plastic wrapper, cleaning supplies, and other items that are unanticipated expenses for putting on a feeding program.
Mallard says they gave a similar grant to Gladstone’s schools to help to make those purchases to help move the food program along. Altogether, the United Way has given out nearly $14,000 in the last four weeks, with one of the biggest grants was $5,000 to help OSF St. Francis Hospital.
Mallard says they’ve also helped Pregnancy Services of Delta County to pay for children’s car seats, which some people normally get through the Public Health Kars program, but can’t get them right now.
Mallard anticipates that number will continue to grow as the need will likely increase.
“We’ll keep giving grants as long as there’s money in the fund,” she said.
Mallard says they’ve been able to be generous because the community has been generous.
“Feel free to make a donation if you are in a position to do so, because the money from the COVID-19 Relief Fund will stay right here in Delta County.”
