State representative Beau LaFave claimed victory late Tuesday night in the 108th state house race in Delta, Dickinson, and Menominee Counties.
With 100-percent of precincts reporting, LaFave had about 64-percent of the vote to 36-percent for Democratic challenger Rene Richer, with roughly 88-percent of the votes counted (29,411-16,791).
“The 200,000 miles I drove for the last four years didn’t hurt, going to community events back when we were allowed to do those,” LaFave told RRN News about how he earned the win. “This was a team effort. I can’t thank the people of Delta, Menominee, and Dickinson Counties enough.”
LaFave believes the vote proves that U.P. residents approve of his near-constant criticism of restrictions placed on businesses and individuals by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
“I have been a harsh critic of a lot of what has been done to allegedly stop COVID,” said LaFave, who himself contracted the virus earlier this fall. “The problem is the restrictions cannot violate the constitution. I believe that the voters vindicated me tonight.”
LaFave says that in his third term, he wants to work on helping people get their jobs back after months of restrictions and uncertainty.
“Our economy needs help,” LaFave said. “Our people need help. They need to get back to work so that they can pay the rent, pay their bills. And we need to keep our taxes low, without hurting things like road funding.”
He says that in lieu of a traditional campain, he had to rely more on social media posts and radio advertising to get his message out.
