An Escanaba business is giving a little helping hand to a longstanding downtown business. Hurley Marine presented a check for $100 Tuesday to Ferdinand’s Mexican Restaurant…the fifth such check the company has given out. Leslie Walch is the Global Sales Manager at Hurley Marine. She says they just want to give back.
“We want to see our community thrive, especially in times like this right now,” Walch said. “We want to be able to help small businesses grow, and do what we can.”
Pamela Mitchell is the co-owner of Ferdinand’s, which has been a staple on Ludington Street for more than 31 years.
“I don’t know how to respond,” she said. “I’m not used to receiving. It’s beautiful living in the U.P. and living in a small town because things like this happen. I am not used to receiving gifts. I’m used to writing out gift certificates and giving gifts of my time, my service, my products.”
Ferdinand’s has been effected…like all Michigan restaurants…by two lengthy state-ordered shutdowns. The current one is set to expire Friday night.
“I’m hoping we’ll be able to reopen, at least at 25 percent (capacity),” Mitchell said. “I have four dining rooms here. I have plenty of room to space people out.”
It is still open for takeout orders.
