Several businesses and apartments were damaged by fire in downtown Ironwood Wednesday night.
Ironwood Public Safety Officers say the call came in at about 8 p.m. for the fire at 135 East Ayer Street. When crews got there several minutes later, a large amount of smoke was seen coming from the building, and the fire was in the basement.
The apartments in the building were evacuated and searched, with help from the Gogebic County Sheriff Department, the Iron County, Wisconsin Sheriff, and Hurley, Wisconsin City Police.
It took three hours to put out the fire, and there were crews on the scene until about 1 Thursday morning.
Two businesses received heavy smoke and fire damage, and one business suffered smoke damage.
There were no injuries reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
