Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II, and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Chief Medical Executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun provided an update regarding COVID-19 and the continued efforts to slow the spread of the virus and ramp up vaccinations efforts.
They were joined by Craig Carmoney, superintendent of the year and Superintendent of Meridian Public Schools in Midland County who was recently appointed to Governor Whitmer’s Student Recovery Advisory Council. The governor talked about the importance of in-person learning and how the state is committed to keeping Michigan safely moving forward.
Whitmer says that 90-percent of schools in Mihcigan either have started, or have announced a date for, starting in-person instruction again.
The governor said that we will not see an increase in restaurant capacity limits for now. The cap is 25-percent, and the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association gave her a plan to raise that to 50-percent. Whitmer said that we’ve got to watch the coronavirus numbers closely to see if the downward trend continues or not.
She did not give a timeline for increasing restaurant or bar capacity, and she did not say when the 10 p.m. curfew would be lifted. Right now, her administration’s orders run through March 29.
The governor pressed Congress for more road funding dollars, and she accused the Michigan legislature of dragging its feet on passing legislation that would spend federal money that we’ve already received for things like COVID-19 testing.
