A plane crash on Beaver Island in northern Lake Michigan has left four dead, with a child as the only survivor.
The Island Airways plane went down at about 2:00 Saturday afternoon, according to the United States Coast Guard in Traverse City. The dead included the pilot, a realtor from Gaylord, and two others. Realtor Mike Perdue’s 11 year-old daughter suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to McLaren Hospital in Petoskey.
Her condition was not known as of Sunday morning.
The Charlevoix County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the plane left Charlevoix at 1:32 p.m. carrying five people. It was bound for Welke Airport on the island near Little Traverse Bay. It crashed near Welke at 1:47 p.m.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
