Brian Burroughs was born and raised in Michigan’s upper peninsula. From a very early age it was clear that he had a knack for drawing and a passion to be creative. He began attending Bay de Noc Community College in 1993 and graduated from Northern Michigan University in 1998 where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree majoring in Art and Design.Over the years, Burroughs has experimented in all different types of media including oil, acrylic, ink, pastel, and clay. However, what he is best known for are his drawings in graphite pencil. Over the past several years, many of Burroughs’ drawings have won awards in juries art shows, including many best of show awards. His original and bizarre ideas are said to be thought provoking as well as a little disturbing to some. It is this unique imagery that has become what Burroughs is best known for.
Brian Burroughs is continuing to create artwork daily. He finds inspiration from his family, music, and nature. Currently, for fun, he enters musician fan art contests online. He has also been collaborating with some local businesses on designs for upcoming products.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
As far back as I can remember, drawing has been one of my favorite hobbies. Being able to construct my own original image on what was once a blank canvas has always filled me with a sense of accomplishment. Over the past twenty years, I have begun to use drawing as a serious form of self-expression, transforming my hobby into a way of creating artwork.
Nearly all my art is based on exploration of relationships. Linking imagery with the feelings that stem from these relationships can be somewhat difficult. This is why much of what I design involves my family, who are my greatest inspirations. Along with the subject of relations, I also frequently use themes of religion, mythology, science, and nature in my work. My use of surreal ideas is another element that I feel is essential in my drawings. I rather enjoy art when it has an element of surprise and an absent of reason. It brings a smile to my face when I create images that I cannot explain. I prefer to allow myself and the viewer the freedom to interpret each piece as they wish.
