Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital opened its doors to the community Thursday evening to show off its new 12-point-8 million dollar expansion. About 150 people came out to get tours of the facility and to meet new CEO Andy Bertapelle, along with outgoing CEO Bob Crumm.
Bertapelle says it was a great opportunity to connect with the community.
“It’s great to be a part of the community, and the community is part of us,” Bertapelle told RRN News. “It’s a huge ecosystem that we’re a part of, and having the community come see it, come talk to us, let us talk about our services, let them see the services and see the high quality of care that they’re going to receive at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital, is a great opportunity.”
A new rehab center with a large therapy pool is a main feature of the expansion, along with the “cornerstone” administrative building. There is new technology and additional treatment rooms.
The expansion allowed the hospital to move all of its services onto one campus, on US-2 just west of Manistique.
“Within our specialty clinic right now, you can get cardiology services, you can get ENT services, you can get orthopedic services, and surgical support services for all of those,” Bertapelle said. “In addition to those, we will be continuing to bring in more specialties.”
Bertapelle says they continue to expand services so people don’t have to leave Manistique for care. He says the hospital continues to face challenges, like most other health care organizations, including staffing issues and Medicare reimbursements.
