Story Written by RRN Intern Braden Kerr
State Senator Ed McBroom won the Republican Primary for the State Senate seat in the 38th District which includes 13 of the 15 Upper Peninsula Counties. McBroom has represented the 38th District for the past four years in the State Senate and served three terms in the House prior to that.
“This is just really humbling when a person starts to watch the numbers come in and think wow, people still support the work I’m doing and the efforts that have been made and it’s both gratifying and humbling and challenging because it’s like you better get up and do the job,” McBroom said about earning another nomination.
With 100% of the precincts reporting, there were 24,342 votes in favor of McBroom while 4,128 were cast for Kayla Wickstrom and Matt Furyk tallied 2,943.
Local officials gathered at Delta County Republican Headquarters to watch and celebrate the nomination on Tuesday night.
When asked about the big issues McBroom said, “I think that Line Five and mining and forestry issues continue to just dominate our current discussion. We have a governor and an attorney general and others who are against Line Five, against the tunnel, and they don’t have any clue about the disaster they are creating by doing that.”
Others issues that McBroom is focusing on are local control of education and the opportunities that the Upper Peninsula’s economy should have at the state and federal level.
On the other side of the ballot John Braamse ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination for State Senate seat of the 38th District. On Tuesday, November 8 McBroom and Braamse will be on the ballot for the State Senate from the 38th District.
