CLICK TO HEAR GOV. WHITMER’S COMMENTS ABOUT THE SKILLS CAMP
Governor Gretchen Whitmer continued her trip to the Upper Peninsula on Thursday to highlight what the recently-signed state budget means to people up here.
For her first stop of the day, Whitmer delivered celebratory remarks to graduates of the Upper Peninsula Construction Council’s inaugural Building Trades Summer Camp in Gladstone.
“It’s important to recognize that there’s a path for everyone in this state, to get them the skills to get them a job that they enjoy, and that they can make a living doing,” Whitmer told RRN News. “The trades are one of those awesome opportunities.”
The UPCC’s Building Trades Summer Camp gave 26 high school students from the Delta/Schoolcraft area a six-week introduction to construction activities. The State of Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Opportunity has identified the Building Trades Summer Camp as a “best practice” in the state.
Over the last six weeks, program participants learned invaluable skills to help them get a jumpstart on their careers or further training or education after graduating. This incredible program prepares talented, hardworking young Yoopers to pursue their potential and land good-paying jobs.
“This was a chance for young people to see all of the kinds of things they can do in the trades,” Whitmer said. “I got a chance to talk to the high schoolers and they’re fired up. They got some soft skills this summer, and got an opportunity to see some things like becoming an operating engineer. Fulfilling career, you get paid well, you get the skills. That’s about the best-case scenario any of us can hope for.”
