The Upper Peninsula Veteran of the Year is Tracey Tippett of Marquette. She is a Marine Veteran, having served from 1987 to 1992, and she’s well-known to this day for running the Marquette County Toys For Tots program at Christmas time. She was honored at the Upper Peninsula State Fair on Thursday.
“It’s quite an honor,” Tippett told RRN News. “But I don’t do the things I do for all this (recognition). I just so thoroughly enjoy doing it. I hope this encourages other female veterans, or even the younger veterans. Get out there and join. But, again, it’s the feel-good feeling of being able to help out the different organizations you belong to. Whatever you do, get out there and volunteer!”
She is the first woman to ever win the U.P. veteran of the year award. Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel, and Congressman Jack Bergman were among those who honored her. Bergman, himself a Marine, was especially happy for Tippett.
“As a Marine veteran, to honor the continued service of the men and women who do so much for the men and women of the U.P.,” Bergman said. “She said it best. Anything a Marine is ever recognized for, it was earned. It’s never been just given to them because they were a Marine. Tracey is an absolutely outstanding example of a person who excelled as a Marine, and continued to excel, after her uniformed service, for the community.”
