The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Marquette-area residents to join the fight to end Alzheimer’s by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® on Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Ellwood A. Mattson Lower Harbor Park (200 N Lakeshore Blvd). Registration is at 9 a.m. and the opening ceremony is at 10 a.m. with the walk to follow.
The Marquette Walk to End Alzheimer’s — which raised more than $36,000 for Alzheimer’s and dementia care, support and critical research last year — brings together individuals and teams from across the Upper Peninsula.
“We encourage people of all ages, uett abilities and backgrounds to help us take the first step toward a world without Alzheimer’s by joining us for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s,” said Jennifer Lepard, president and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association Michigan Chapter. “More than 6 million people in the U.S. are living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, and it is estimated that, this year alone, the disease will cost the country $321 billion. This event helps us provide care and support for the more than 190,000 Michiganders affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, and helps us to fund important research to end this terrible disease.”
The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. In Michigan, the event takes place in 25 locations across the state in September and October.
“This Walk means so much to so many people. It is also a life changing event,” said Alzheimer’s Association Michigan Chapter senior director of development, Kyle Leonard. “We are working hard to raise awareness. The money from fundraising goes towards the care, support, and research of Alzheimer’s disease. The experience of the Walk reminds us that as we come together, we can make a difference.”
This year the event will be in person. Registered participants who wish to walk from home can find more details in their Participant Center. The health and safety of participants, volunteers, and staff remain our top priorities. We will continue to closely monitor CDC, state and local guidelines to ensure Walk events adhere to the latest recommendations.
Current sponsors of the Marquette Walk to End Alzheimer’s include: Brookridge Heights Assisted Living and Memory Care, UP Rehab Services, Mill Creek At Harlow Farms, and U.P. Home Health and Hospice.
National presenting sponsors of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s are CVS Health and Edward Jones.
