Former President Barack Obama joined Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist, and Michigan Democrats for a Get Out the Vote rally in Detroit, in an effort to organize, volunteer, and get out the vote ahead of the November election.
During the event, attended by some 3,000 people, Whitmer highlighted the stakes of the race as access to abortion, voting rights and public education are at risk in Michigan.
She discussed her work building a stronger Michigan by cutting costs for working families, building resilient infrastructure while supporting tens of thousands of good-paying jobs, and strengthening Michigan’s economy by working with Democrats and Republicans in the legislature to secure 30,000 good-paying auto jobs – including the first new auto plant in Detroit in nearly 30 years.
Whitmer and Gilchrist have been campaining across Michigan for the past two weeks on what they call the “Getting Things Done” road trip. So far, the only Upper Peninsula stop on this trip was last weekend in Marquette and Chatham.
Obama’s appearance follows one month after former President Donald Trump campaigned in metro Detroit for Republican gubneratorial candidate Tudor Dixon. Election Day is Nov. 8, and polls show Whitmer’s once 17-point lead has dwindled to just a few points.
