Governor Gretchen Whitmer early Wednesday morning claimed victory in her re-election effort, after all of the major news outlets projected her pulling away from Republican Tudor Dixon in a hotly-contested race. Whitmer addressed supporters at about 1:20 a.m. at a Democratic watch party in Detroit.
“Regardless of who is in office, we will always work with anyone who wants to solve a problem because there’s nothing more important than all of the people of this state,” Whitmer said. “I thank you for being here to the wee hours of the morning, but if you would like to return for a press conference in the morning, we will be ready to talk about the future of Michigan.”
As of 3 a.m. Wednesday, Whitmer had just over two million votes, or 53.2 percent. Dixon trailed with 1.733 million votes, or 45.2 percent.
Whitmer campaign manager Preston Elliott released the following statement in response to the general election results:
“Tonight, Michiganders across the state made their voices heard to re-elect Governor Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist so they can continue building on their historic progress investing in public education, strengthening infrastructure, fixing the damn roads, growing the economy, and defending reproductive freedom. Governor Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist are grateful for the overwhelming support of Michiganders from Monroe to Marquette and look forward to continuing to serve the great state of Michigan for four more years.”
Dixon issued a statement three hours earlier claiming that the election was not over, and the votes were still being counted across the state.
