Michigan voters have approved Proposal Three, which propurts to protect abortion rights in Michigan constitution.
As of 3 a.m. Wednesday morning, the yes vote had 55.8 percent of the vote, compared to 44.2 percent no votes. This was out of more than 3.6 million votes counted, about 77-percent of the expected total.
The effort to get this proposal on the Michigan ballot started earlier this year when it was leaked that the United States Supreme Court would overturn the Roe Vs Wade decision which had made abortion nationwide legal. A Michigan 1931 law still on the books would have gone into effect, banning the practice in Michigan. Governor Gretchen Whitmer sued to block the law, and a judge did block it. Now, with Proposal Three passing, the law will be repealed.
The Committee to Protect Health Care celebrated the passage of Proposal 3 to restore the rights of Roe v. Wade in Michigan. Proposal 3 will prevent Michigan from reverting back to the 1931 law that bans most abortions, even in cases of rape, incests, and health complications. The Committee and its members, medical professionals across the state of Michigan, played an active role in supporting Proposal 3.
“This is a historic victory for reproductive rights in Michigan, and the Committee to Protect Health Care was proud to help get Proposal 3 across the finish line,” said Dr. Rob Davidson, Executive Director of the Committee to Protect Health Care and West Michigan emergency physician. “Together with campaign leaders and activists, doctors and health care professionals, the Committee has helped make Michigan a leader for protecting abortion rights. We look forward to continuing the fight on behalf of patients in states across the country.”
Over 2,000 medical professionals in Michigan signed on in support of Proposal 3 to restore the protections of Roe in Michigan. Over 1,500 medical professionals signed a letter calling for Proposal 3 to get on the Nov. ballot, and an additional 500 medical professionals recently added their support urging Michigan voters to pass Proposal 3. In total, over 2,000 unique signers shared their support for this groundbreaking effort.
“Thanks to the voters of Michigan, and the steadfast support of the countless doctors, nurses, volunteers, and donors across the state, Proposal 3 has successfully restored the protections of Roe v. Wade in Michigan,” said Dr. Melissa Bayne, an obstetrician gynecologist in Fremont and member of the Committee to Protect Health Care. “We’re grateful that Michiganders voted to empower women with the freedom to make their own health care decisions, free from political interference. This victory will pave the way for voters in other states to repeal abortion bans and take their private health care decisions back into their own hands.”
Dr. Omari Young, an obstetrician gynecologist in Flint and member of the Committee to Protect Health Care, said, “Thousands of medical professionals of all backgrounds were united in support of Proposal 3 to ensure we can continue to provide the highest quality of care for our patients. By getting Michigan’s dangerous 1931 abortion ban off the books, Proposal 3 ensures that, when complications arise during pregnancies, doctors can use our full medical training to act quickly and save our patients’ health and lives. The voters and volunteers who passed Proposal 3 will save countless lives.”
