Communities that Care (CTC) and Healthy Youth Coalition (HYC) of Marinette and Menominee Counties would like to recognize Shelby’s Quik Mart in Carney, Gary’s Quality Foods of Wallace, Gary’s Quality Foods of Stephenson, and Cenex Gas Stations (Powers and Stephenson locations) for allowing us to conduct the “Sticker Shock” campaign on November 9th and 10th.
Convenient stores and gas stations in Menominee County who sell alcohol were asked to participate in the project which consists of stickering cases of beer, wine coolers, seltzers/malt beverages, and other multi-packs of alcohol before opening day of hunting season to educate those over 21 the legal consequences of providing to minors. According to local data, underage drinking rates increase around hunting season, as alcohol is often given in celebrations of hunting success among young hunters.
Camp gatherings with minors, and underage parties, also occur in higher concentrations during this time of year in our community.
A local survey given to students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 in 2019 indicates that over 60% reported the #1-way youth are provided alcohol is willingly from a parent. Underage drinking rates throughout Marinette and Menominee Counties is still above the national average, although we are seeing decreases in the behavior thanks to projects like this.
Not providing alcohol to minors under the age of 21 can protect brain development and decrease the likelihood of addiction later in life.
CTC and HYC would also like to recognize the Carney and North Central HYC youth members and advisors, the Menominee County Sheriff’s Department, and Public Health Delta and Menominee Counties, for participating in the two-day project with our staff. The Healthy Youth Coalition has conducted this program for the past twelve years and are thankful for the additional support of the Communities that Care coalition this year for partnering and covering the cost of the project.
