The Hiawatha National Forest would like to remind the public (including recreational residences holders and private land cabin inholders) that snow plowing permits are available and necessary during the winter season on the Forest.
“Road use permits are required for certain activities on National Forest System roads such as hauling gravel, plowing snow to personal cabins, or moving timber,” said Mary Moore, Hiawatha Forest Supervisor.
Obtaining a permit is easy, plus it helps ensure public safety with the mix of uses occurring on Forest roads.
“The permit process also helps limit potential damage to the road bed,” Moore said.
Individuals planning to plow snow on Forest roads or to haul gravel/timber within the jurisdiction of the Hiawatha National Forest are required to obtain a permit before beginning that use. Permits provide guidance and specifications to provide for the safety of all users. Individuals operating without a permit may be ticketed. The type of permit is based on the use being permitted, some are free and some include a small fee.
