Hiawatha National Forest and its partners regret the need to cancel this year’s Winter Trails Day event planned for February 18 at Rapid River Ski Trail. The trail has lost its snow base due to unseasonably warm weather has and no significant snowfall is predicted for the coming week.
“The warm temperatures and rain have created icy and unsuitable current conditions at the Rapid River Ski Trails, and without any additional snow the trails can not be groomed to produce satisfactory conditions for the event,” said District Ranger Charlie Marsh. In fact, across both zones of the national forest trails near Lake Michigan have lost most of their snow in the recent warm spell. Weather permitting, the Forest Service and partners aim to host the event again in 2024.
“On the other hand, skiers and snowshoers may still find many opportunities for snow activities on the north end of both zones,” Marsh noted.
Not only are skiing and snowshoeing great ways to just get outdoors, but they also support fitness.
