The Escanaba Area Public Schools were awarded an Arts In Education Grant from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council in the amount of $6,243.00.
The Building Community Through World Music residency program will bring children’s music veteran and mindfulness instructor Guy Louis Sferlazza into the lower elementary buildings, Webster and Lemmer. Guy will visit Escanaba for a week-long residency program from April 17th – 21st. This includes 27 classroom visits and an evening concert. Guy will be sharing his knowledge of music and culture from Africa, India, and Native America.
Escanaba early elementary music teacher, Mr. Lorne Watson, has been working closely with Guy to plan the residency. Together they will present a free family concert for the community on April 19th, 2023 at the Upper Elementary School in the Oliver Auditorium starting at 6:30 pm. The concert will showcase the music from the residency and will strive to bring everyone together through music.
“This is a great opportunity for our community and our students. To have someone from outside of our area bringing in their talents and knowledge is priceless,” says Mr. Watson. “It will enrich not only my music classroom, but all that are exposed to Guy’s talents,”
Guy presents a wide variety of cultural and educational musical programs in schools during the school year, and spends each summer delivering family fun community concerts throughout the Great Lakes region. He is a touring artist for the Michigan Arts and Humanities Touring Arts program, where he has been selected as “one of the finest touring artists in the state”.
Since 1966, the State of Michigan has recognized the value and importance of a vibrant arts and cultural sector. The Michigan Arts and Culture Council was established to maintain and nurture its cultural and artistic riches. The Council guides the distribution of resources to ensure that Michigan communities thrive from the civic, economic, and educational benefits of arts and culture.
