Hiawatha National Forest’s Forest Supervisor Shannon Rische has announced the selection of Derek T. Goodwin as the District Ranger of the Hiawatha National Forest’s Sault Ste. Marie and St. Ignace Ranger Districts in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
“We are very excited to welcome Derek to this important leadership role in the Hiawatha’s East Zone,” Rische said. “He brings a broad array of experience, skills, and knowledge to his new position, and will provide valuable perspectives to our Forest Leadership Team.”
“After working on the Rapid River/ Manistique Ranger District on a temporary basis last summer, I am excited to be moving to the Upper Peninsula permanently to work with the great folks on the Hiawatha,” said Goodwin.
He replaces Robert West, who accepted a position as the Deputy Forest Supervisor the Monongahela National Forest in September 2022.
Goodwin comes to the Hiawatha from his most recent post as the Supervisory Social Services Assistant on the US Forest Service’s Weber Basin Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center on Uinta-Wasatach-Cache National Forest in Utah. Prior to that, he was instrumental in developing leadership programs that foster ownership, dedication, and commitment to a whole host of programs. He holds a Master’s of Secondary Education from Colorado State University and a Master’s of Adult Education from the University of Phoenix. He is also currently defending his Doctoral degree in Leadership and Development. Derek is a fan of the great outdoors and loves to fish and hunt, while striving to protect and provide these resources to future generations. In his spare time, he loves to teach downhill skiing, fly airplanes, and train animals (service dogs).
Goodwin will assume his new duties on July 3, 2023.
