Hiawatha National Forest Supervisor, Shannon Rische, announced today that Monocle Lake Campground on the Forest’s East Zone will re-open this season on August 28, 2023, for first come, first served camping.
Monocle Lake Campground and five others (Brevoort Lake, Lake Michigan, Carp River, Soldier Lake, and Bay View Campgrounds) were affected by an unexpected closure. Individuals who held cancelled reservations at any of the closed campgrounds were given advance notice of the re-opening. While we regret that the cancellations impacted forest visitors and our local communities, we are pleased to have re-opened two of the campgrounds for the remainder of the season. Lake Michigan Campground was re-opened earlier this month, with reservations via Recreation.gov. Three Lakes Campground is also open.
“Our staff has really come together as a team to address this issue, and the result of their hard work is that we can welcome campers back to Monocle Lake this year,” said Rische.
Without a concessionaire, the Forest could not prepare or operate all six affected campgrounds this season, so the decision was made to re-open two of the affected campgrounds and to limit reservations to the Lake Michigan Campground. Reservations at Monocle Lake Campground will resume in 2024.
Coincidentally, the Forest Service was already scheduled to offer a new campground concessionaire prospectus for a 5-to-10-year special use permit to manage the Forest’s east zone campgrounds in the future.
