RNs and healthcare professionals at Aurora Medical Center – Bay Area will be holding a rally this Thursday evening to call for a “fair contract that puts patients first”. Nurses will be holding signs and wearing red to drum up public support for their position.
Workers at the hospital have been working under an expired contract since September 30.
“We are fighting for our community hospital and for our voices as workers,” said Emily Peretto, RN. “We need to make sure our patients come before corporate profits. Healthcare executives need to be held accountable. We need to make sure that our community is kept safe and can always have the highest quality of patient care.”
Nurses and healthcare professionals have been negotiating together as a union across the table from hospital executives since the end of June. The workers say that they are frustrated by the attitude of Aurora’s administration during contract negotiations. Currently, the health system is refusing to provide contractually guaranteed wages, safe staffing levels, or common-sense safety protections.
“This is a pivotal moment for us as union members and for our community as a whole,” said Deanna Gamelin, a medical technologist at the hospital. “We’re rallying because it’s time to speak up for our friends, family, and neighbors. We can’t be ignored by this giant health system’s executives. Our voices must be heard. We need to be listened to.”
