After some two years of planning, the Ishpeming Schools is finally opening its Hema-Tyke Childcare and Education Center. Ishpeming School Superintendent Carrie Meyer says the doors will open officially on Monday, October 30th.
“There was a group of us that knew there was a need in the Ishpeming community for child care,” Meyer told RRN News. “So, based on our strategic plans, we started writing grants and developing plans, and we are, after going through licensing and building renovations, creating handbooks and policies, making purchases and setting this up, we are officially opening.”
Meyer says that several years ago, they opened up a preschool, and since then, the need has grown. She says this new center, located at the St. John’s Church, will have a much wider scope.
“The center will be open year-round,” Meyer said. “We will host three rooms. We have an infant room, a toddler room, and a preschool room. The center is staffed with seven individuals at this point. There’s a director, three teachers, and three aides. These people are very excited to get ready and to start providing services to our 30 students who are enrolled in the program.”
Those 30 students come from 28 different families, and are different ages. Meyer says the center will take up the first floor of the old St. John’s School, on Pine Street, just down the street from the middle-high school building. The expansion was done, in part, with a $100,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, as well as one from the Marquette-Alger Regional Education Agency.
Meyer says they do have a few spots left. Call Mary Ann at 906-315-1496.
