Upper Peninsula Congressman Jack Bergman announced Friday that he is running to serve as Speaker.
“My hat is in the ring, and I feel confident I can win the votes where others could not. I have no special interests to serve; I’m only in this to do what’s best for our Nation and to steady the ship for the 118th Congress.”
A retired U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant General, Bergman is widely respected on both sides of the aisle for his national security expertise, his grasp of the Nation’s financial crisis, and his proven ability to work with Members of both parties.
A recent opinion piece in The Hill stated, “of the 19 bills signed into law in this Congress, 3 were Rep. Bergman’s.”
Bergman served 40 years in the United States Marine Corps, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant General. He is the highest-ranking combat Veteran ever elected to the United States Congress.
“The regular functioning of the federal government can’t wait on useless infighting and arguments,” Bergman stated. “What matters right now is choosing a Speaker in order to make sure that our government—and particularly our military—is funded, and that both our homeland and our critical allies are secure in this time of crisis.”
Bergman annoumnced Friday night that four Michigan Republican members of Congress have endorsed Bergman in his bid to serve as Speaker of the House.
Reps. John James, Tim Walberg, Lisa McClain, and John Moolenaar endorsed his candidacy to become Speaker for the remainder of the 118th Congress.
The members noted, “General Jack Bergman is the leader best suited to right the ship of the Republican conference and help lead the House through the 118th Congress. He isn’t seeking a long-term leadership post, but is willing to help build our conference, pass critical legislation, and keep our commitment to the American people. We wholeheartedly endorse his race for speaker and urge our colleagues to help us get the job done.”
Bergman served 40 years in the United States Marine Corps, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant General. He is the highest-ranking combat Veteran ever elected to the United States Congress. Bergman brings an outsider perspective to leadership in Washington and has worked with Members from all different walks of life to build coalitions and pass meaningful legislation.
Rep. John James serves on the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, House Foreign Affairs Committee, and the House Education & Workforce Committee.
Rep. Lisa McClain serves in Leadership as Republican Conference Secretary, Serves with Rep. Bergman on the House Armed Services Committee and Budget Committee, and also serves on the Committee on Education and the Workforce.
Rep. John Moolenaar serves on the House Committee on Appropriations.
Rep Tim Walberg, Michigan’s “Dean” serves on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
