Michigan Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist wrapped up his Upper Peninsula tour on Monday, with a viist to the Negaunee Regional Communication Center
The center is the primary 911 call center, providing full service 911 call taking and dispatch for all MSP, local law enforcement, EMS, and fire services for Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton, Keweenaw, Ontonagon, and Schoolcraft counties.
It cost some $4 million to buold, which Gilchrist told RRN News that it shows an “unprecedented commitment to public safety” by the Whitner administration since it first took office in 2019.Gilchrist also visited a Negaunee elementary school during lunch time to serve meals and visit students.
This year’s state budget provides free breakfast and lunch to 1.4 million public school students, saving their families over $850 a year, and time every morning.
The state legislature allocated $160 million toward providing free breakfast and lunch to public school children.
Gilchrist says it makes sure that “no kid finishes the day hungry”, and also “eliminates the stigma” of a kid getting a free meal, since every kid is now entitiled to one.
Gilchrist said on Monday that it is part of a larger plan to set students in Michigan up for success.
“One of the other important things here in the U.P. and frankly, all across Michigan, is increasing access to child care,” Gilchrist said. “It’s something we’ve been investing heavily in over the last four years. I launched a program called ‘Caring for My Future’ that’s going to open 1,000 new childcare facilities across the state, and we’re about 700-plus into that program already.”
