CLICK TO HEAR JACK HALL’S INTERVIEW WITH MANISTIQUE NATIVE BRYCE BLIXT
The shootings that ended the lives of five people one week ago in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario happened just down the street from the home of a Manistique native.
Bryce Blixt is attending Sault College, and although he was not at his apartment when the murders happened, he says that it was a big shock.
“It’s been a little bit rough,” Blixt told RRN News. “It was sad and tragic for the community, especially when it happens to three children (six, seven, and 12 years old). They had a future, you know. They had a long future ahead of themselves. And it was taken away, literally with the flash of an eye.”
Blixt says this shooting, which happened on Second Line, a long street that traverses the Sault Ste. Marie community, is relatively close to his residence.
“I’m surprised about exactly where it happened,” the 2023 Manistique High School graduate said. “Most of the situations like that happen closer to downtown. It was shocking to hear that it happened relatively close.”
Blixt says it wasn’t the first tragedy of “intimate partner violence” to happen in Sault Ste. Marie, which is just across the river from the Upper Peninsula community of the same name.
“When there’s a population of 70,000 (on the Canadian side, as opposed to 10,000 on the Michigan side), you’re going to hear issues like that,” Blixt said. “There was a situation that happened probably a month and a half ago, where there was the same situation of intimate partner violence, and you find a body in the river with a homicidal stabbing. It’s kind of scary.”
Even so, Blixt says he’s not scared for his own safety.
“I’ll be fine,” he said.
He says the Sault Ste. Marie community came together Friday night for a candlelight vigil to remember the five lives lost last Monday.
According to the Sault Star newspaper, the event was also to remember the two people involved in that fatal stabbing incident that Blixt mentioned, as well as two other people who died in recent fatal traffic accidents.
