United Way of Marquette County has coordinated a Food Drive to take place on Friday, November 3rd and Saturday, November 4th outside Walmart in Marquette.
Shoppers may donate from 10 am – 6 pm both days and may donate in three different ways.
First, nonperishable food items will be collected as part of the TV6 Canathon. All items donated to the TV6 Canathon will be distributed to local food pantries, including The Salvation Army Marquette and St. Vincent de Paul Marquette.
Second, perishable items will be collected by local nonprofits, many of whom will be on-site helping to collect the items. Local nonprofits participating include Community Action Alger-Marquette, Great Lakes Recovery Centers, Janzen House, Lake Superior Village Youth & Family Center, Negaunee Senior Citizen’s Center, Propylon Nonprofit Housing, Room at the Inn, and the Women’s Center.
Third, United Way of Marquette County will collect monetary contributions to support food security programs throughout Marquette County.
“This is a great opportunity to bring multiple groups together in a collaborative effort to raise awareness in the community of the food insecurity faced by our neighbors and the programs actively fighting to improve food security in our area,” said UWMC Executive Director Andrew Rickauer.
“It’s rare that people can easily donate perishable food items, such as meat, dairy, and fresh produce. It’s nice to know that agencies will be on-site and able to put it directly to use in their programs serving their clients,” added UWMC Program Coordinator Holly Michelin. “The most requested perishable items are ground beef, cheese, and whole fruits and vegetables with a longer shelf life,” added Michelin.
