It is National Police Week, and here in the Upper Peninsula, the annual Peace Officers Memorial Service will be held Thursday up in the Copper Country. Departments from across the U-P, northern Wisconsin, and northern Ontario will all converge on the Michigan Tech University campus for the ceremony.
Michigan State Police Lieutenant Ben Eckola is helping to organzie it amd he says it is an emotional day that honors officers who have been killed in the line of duty, and also thanks our current officers for their service.
The event begins with the annual procession of police vehicles at 10 a.m. from Calumet to Houghton, before the service is held inside Tech’s Student Ice Arena at 11:00. The public is invited. You’ll see the roll call of fallen officers, laying of the wreath, a performance of taps, and words from keynote speaker Dan Helmer, Houghton County Prosecutor.
