Escanaba’s Bonafis Art Center was damaged by fire late Thursday night as heavy thunderstorms rolled through the downtown area.
Escanaba Public Safety got the call at 10:33 p.m. and multiple township fire crews were also asked to help out as the century-old cement-and-wood structure was smoldering from the attic and roof area.
Crews were on the scene for more than two hours before mutual aid departments were released and EPSD mopped up. We are awaiting more information from Public Safety about the extent of damage, and whether or not lightning from a thunderstorm is indeed what caused the blaze. We are told that nobody was inside the building at the time of the fire, so fortunately, there were no injuries.
