As of tonight, the second individual who had been missing following Saturday morning’s canoe incident in Copper Harbor has been located and recovered.
Our deepest condolences go out to the families, friends, and loved ones affected by this tragic event. We ask that their privacy be respected during this incredibly difficult time.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all of the agencies and personnel who assisted in this operation, including Keweenaw Search and Rescue, Copper Harbor FD, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Michigan State Police dive team, Michigan DNR, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, local area restaurants and businesses who donated food and supplies.
The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office would also like to thank the community for their continued support and cooperation throughout this challenging recovery effort.

In the early morning hours of Saturday, June 28th, 2025, three individuals were canoeing in Copper Harbor when their vessel capsized. One individual was able to make it to shore and promptly contacted 911 at approximately 3:50 a.m. to report the emergency.
Multiple agencies immediately responded, including the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office, Keweenaw Search and Rescue, Copper Harbor Fire, U.S. Coast Guard (with helicopter support), Michigan DNR, and the Michigan State Police dive team.
As of this evening, one of the two missing individuals has been located, and their body recovered. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
Search and recovery efforts for the remaining individual have been suspended for the night due to safety and operational considerations. Recovery operations will resume tomorrow morning with the continued support of all partner agencies.
We respectfully ask the public to avoid the area and to honor the privacy of the families affected.

On Saturday, June 28th, 2025, at approximately 3:50 am, the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a water emergency in Copper Harbor.
Multiple agencies are actively involved in the ongoing search and recovery efforts, including the Sheriff’s Office, Keweenaw Search and Rescue, Copper Harbor Fire, the U.S. Coast Guard (with helicopter support), and the Michigan State Police dive team, which is en route from lower Michigan.
At this time, two individuals are unaccounted for. Crews are working diligently to bring closure to the families affected by this tragic incident.
We kindly ask the public to avoid the area to allow emergency personnel to operate safely and efficiently, and to respect the privacy of the families during this difficult time.
